Sophie trailed Lucas into the kitchen, amazement still playing through her head. “If I’d known what was in store for me, I wouldn’t have waited two weeks for dinner.” She didn’t know what exactly she’d expected when she showed up at Lucas’ house for their date. Maybe something along the lines of the sandwiches he’d brought for lunch or even takeout.

A four-course, homemade meal had never even been a thought in her mind. She consumed every last bite though, and they had all been beyond delicious. Her cooking was passable, but considering she only had a seven-year-old to impress, she didn’t really worry. It sure didn’t match up to the meal Lucas put together.

“You showed up at my house with pizza.” Brilliant, Soph. Make it sound like a criticism.

“That was for Jimmy.” He placed the plates he carried on the counter and turned toward her, leaning back. “Tonight’s all about you.”

Every time he said things like that, her heart did a little stutter step. Ben had done things to please himself and she got dragged along for the ride. If she’d happened to enjoy it, she called it a win, but it was never the goal. Even when they were newly dating, her happiness had never been his priority.

Nothing like how she felt whenever she spent time with Lucas. Or talked to Lucas. Or even thought about him.

Taking a place opposite him, she mimicked his pose, resting against the minuscule island. “Still, I had no idea you could do all that,” she offered with a wave of her hand back to the table they’d sat at.

“Soph, please. First, I’m part Italian. My Gran pulled each of us into the kitchen, kicking and screaming in my brother’s case, to teach us how to cook when we turned five. The minute any of my cousins mention a new significant other, the first thing she does is ask if they cooked for the person yet.” Well, he’d certainly ticked that box off early in the relationship. “Though if you ask me, it may not be as much of a benefit for some. We may all know how to cook, but not all of us do it successfully.” He winked her way. “Unlike me.”

Silly, flirty man.

“I only met Dante briefly, but he doesn’t seem like the kicking and screaming type, even as a child.” The man seemed a little stuck up, or maybe reserved was the right word, but considering the brief background Lucas had given her, she could see why.

“Nope, not him.” He pivoted to the refrigerator and pulled out a chilled wine bottle. “Stefano. He and Giana round out the family.”

“Ahh. So he’s not going to impress anyone, then?” If the man looked anything like Lucas, and Dante for that matter, and could cook, the women would be lined up for miles.

Stretching for two new glasses, he shot her a look hot enough to singe her skin. All lust and dirty thoughts, before breaking into a wide, teasing grin. How did he do that to her? Turn her on one second, then make her feel wrapped up in a big, warm hug the next.
